Shooting for Millersville is always interesting. If only for the almost Darwinian struggles one endures to park anywhere near the school.

Tonight Dr. Temple Grandin spoke on autism there. Originally scheduled for the comparatively tiny Lehr dining room, the lecture was to Pucille Gym because of, I assume, overwhelming demand. It’s not many lecturers there that have a currently running HBO feature film made about them. Add in, it looks like a surefire Emmy for Claire Danes, who plays Grandin in the film, you’ve got an event that would nearly max out capacity at Pucillo Gym.

To say Dr. Grandin is a high functioning autistic person is to describe me as a high functioning primate. She’s brilliant. She’s an entertaining and informative speaker. Much funnier than I expected. She was very engaged with the audience. One of the hurdles I had to jump tonight was not distracting her while she spoke. At the beginning she asked if everyone could stay seated as much as possible as it’s distracting for her to have people moving around in her field of vision. Frankly, I think it would be distracting for anyone, obviously, moreso for her. Needless to say, I picked the wrong night to be covered in a red polo shirt. I was like an enormous “look at me target”. I only used flash for a few shots as that was extremely difficult for her. I tested that out before she even started speaking and ditched the flash. Sad, as the gym was darkened somewhat.

So I spent the evening lurking around corner and hiding behind things. In fact, the only shots of her face on were taken from the very back of the gym with me hiding behind the bleachers or people standing. Most of the shots are from behind her and above her.

A wonderful lecture. It’s a privilege to get shoot people such as Dr. Grandin.

There’s the old saw about the mechanic who has a car up on blocks in his front yard. Same goes for photographers or at least this one. I seldom take photographs of the family. So on a whim Kimberly dragged me outside today to shoot a few frames. Here are my favorites.

Shot for a client whose son was participating in the meet. Here are some samples from two Ephrata High School swim meets. And yes, if you would like shots of of one of your kids or significant other’s sports, I would love to do it. I love shooting sports.

Kady is two weeks old

I don’t shoot portraits often, in a formal sense at least. I photograph people all the time but I don’t sit down with the specific intention of photographing a person’s face very frequently. A friend of my wife recently had her first child. She asked if I would take some informal pictures of Kady and of course, who am I to to refuse? The pictures are set in the families home with no attempt made create a set. We just wanted to document Kady at two weeks. So we did.

This is how you put a baby to sleep. I had no idea. It’s like the Vulcan Nerve Pinch for babies I guess.

I’ve just about finished rebuilding a small product studio here in the house. This test is a the result of that work. I’m really excited to be able to shoot things here in the house again. I love small product work, it’s something I enjoy and I think I’m fairly competent at it.

Watches

In many ways I kick started my professional career shooting high end and vintage watches. I love wristwatches. So I will always shoot them though it’s (unfortunately) that I get to anymore. Even more rare when something like the example below comes to me. This is a 1951 Elgin canteen watch. Notable for a number of reasons but primarily because it’s one of the very first diving watches ever made. Using by Navy frogmen whose equipment, much like this watch, would seem very unusual. Some of these photographs will be used in an upcoming book on military watches.

This is a wonderful little piece of horological history and I was lucky to have the chance to shoot it.
