Just because it’s pretty

Sometimes (well, most of the time) that’s excuse enough to take the picture.

Trinity Lutheran Church

So I neeed a shot of the convention center. Ideally, a nice wide shot.

It’s simple enough to get a shot of some portion or other of the cenvention center. It’s trying to get all of it, without the buildings that it’s nestled in between.

So after visiting the roof of Southern Market, the roof level of the King Street Garage I noticed this church steeple. Why not I thought?

The wonderful people at Trinity Lutheran allowed me to scale the their steeple (with guidance from Trinity Sexton, Geoff Herr). To say the least it was an amazing experience. Ignoring the view from the steeple, the church itself is a work of art. It’s like going back in time. And all of it, everything, is immaculate. They’ve just finished an eight year long restoration. The church is this beautiful combination of brand new and antique. It is like going back in time.

Here are few shots from the Trinity gallery.

This is shot from inside the steeple where 200 years of painters, carpenters and other service people have left their names.

Spring and light

Light is the photographer’s best friend. So most of us welcome just about any time we can get more of it. With the days getting longer it means more opportunities to grab some of that light.

And finally, a more traditional representation of spring, a tree at F&M about to bloom.

It should be a busy weekend and the pace won’t slow through the end of this month. Look for lots of new images from all over place.

Product work

0

I’ve just finished some for work LPW Racing shooting one of their parts lines. Some samples from that shoot are below and without wallowing (too much) in self-congratulatory blather, I’m really happy with them. I love doing product work. As much as I enjoy event work, it’s really nice to be able to inhabit my own little world and have the pleasure of the extra time to craft images that really pop. Obviously the background on these are dropped in as is the shadow. I could certainly shoot these with a blue background and create a shadow but the sort of hyper-surreality of the pure background and Photoshop shadowing is much stronger.

Enjoy.

The good, and the bad and ugly

0

Shooting the Obama rally was “stressful” to say the least. I hope, for his sake, that his campaign is better run and staffed than what I saw. It was a wonderful opportunity to shoot a presidential candidate’s rally and really brought home how needlessly difficult my job can be sometimes. I’ll stick to the local folks thank you.

DSC_4199_01287.JPG

So what was the “bad and ugly” part. The good part, my long-time friend Michael Manring was in Reading playing his almost annual gig at the Berks County Jazz Festival last night. Seeing Michael is always wonderful and hearing him play, always inspiring. For more notes on this show visit the set page here:

In the meantime, here are some of my favorites…

Soundcheck

So the local Reading television station visited the soundcheck to do the weather over the top of Michael and David playing and pump the show (and the festival) a bit. Here’s a couple of views of that.

As I said, go check out the whole set.

Another exciting week

From Saturday, here’s my neighborhood Jeff and his kids Marcus and Monica in line to get Obama tickets for his Monday speech here in Lancaster…

And then how about some pretty flowers from the Boas’ nursery on Columbia Avenue (it is officially spring now)…

DSC_4028_01132.JPG

I’ll be out with the Mayor and Senator Obama tomorrow morning. I’ll be sure to post something from that shoot here later on. Then it’s off to Reading to see the world’s greatest bass player, Michael Manring, at the Reading Jazz Festival Monday evening. When I worked for BMG in San Francisco I had the pleasure to work Michael’s records and get to know him. Michael and guitarist David Cullen are playing their annual show together during the Festival. It’s a great show in a tiny little club at the Reading Sheraton. If you’re in the area, check it out.

Back from the past

So what I have been doing lately? Here’s a quick roundup.

On the 15th I shot the LCPJ peace rally. Here’s one of the shots I like a lot.

DSC_3100_00309.JPG

Later that evening there was a candlelight vigil at the courthouse. Here’s one shot from that set.

DSC_3335_00407.JPG

On the 18th I shot at a ceremony at Musser Park introducing the new lighting system they’ve installed. It’s really a beautiful in-ground system of lighting that illuminates the tree branches in the most surreal way. I’m curious to see what happens this summer once the trees get leaves. It will totally change the look.

DSC_3386_00525.JPG

On the 19th my good friend from the City got press access for me at the Hillary Clinton rally at Millersville University. It was the first time I’ve shot something political at that level. It was interesting. The similarities between shooting something like that and shooting a major musical artist were almost non-existent.

On the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq war there was another candlelight vigil at the courthouse. Here is one of the shots from that.

DSC_3708_00802.JPG

The nice folks from Building Character hosted the monthly Creative House of Lancaster meeting. I stopped in an shot a few frames. It’s a wonderful space and filled with interesting things to photograph.

DSC_3719_00858.JPG

This past Wednesday I shot some images at a roll out meeting for a program I’m the designer for. Here’s one shot from that.

DSC_3765_01006.JPG

Yesterday afternoon the Sertoma Club of Lancaster held the media lunch for this year’s “World’s Largest Chicken Barbecue”. Here’s a totally unrelated shot from that lunch but a shot I really love.

DSC_3815_00957.JPG

By the way, I’ll be chronicling the entire event this year spending about thirty hours shooting and posting from it. It’s ana amazing, almost difficult to describe event from a visual perspective. If you haven’t seen the shots from last year’s barbecue, check them out. I’m very proud of them.

And then last night there was an excellent public forum on immigration policy hosted by the ACLU and the LCPJ. No matter what anyone says, the ugliest lighting in the city is in the City Council Chambers at Southern Market. Great forum though.

DSC_3881_00893.JPG

And then this coming weekend I’ll be shooting the annual convention of one of the most influential political websites in Philadelphia. I’ll be posting those shots as regularly as wireless access and time allows. It starts Friday evening and runs through Sunday. I’ll be there Friday night and following the entire schedule all and evening Saturday.

On the way

I just finished all the post processing on the shots from the vigil this evening. It’s 11:15. The upload from this afternoon’s shots of the rally are still uploading. Seven hours and counting… Almost done. 1.49 gigs of shots (210 in all).

For those of visiting this evening I would guess that by 11:45 all the afternoon shots will be uploaded. I’ll begin the evening shots immediately thereafter.

You can view new images in the gallery as they upload but you’ll have to hit refresh on the main gallery page. Bear in mind it’s taking about two minutes for each image to upload so I don’t necessarily recommend that strategy.

Thanks for coming by.

No more on the events of today other than to say it was an amazing experience. I’ll have a lot more to say later.

—–

Ok, I was way off on the time. It’s 12:48 and the last eight images of the afternoon are now uploading. I will start the vigil images as soon as those last eight are done.

Whenever that is.
