Epiphany

As bright as I like to think I am, every so often I’m reminded that I’m a bit more porochial and dim than I would wish to be.

Having spent most of my life in cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, I tend to compare every place I live to those cities. Whether or not it’s accurate, fair or even reasonable, I do it. It’s a prejudice of sorts.

So when I set out to shoot ArtWalk on Saturday morning I expected, well, not nearly as much as I saw. And I’m admitting this up front because I want to set a context for my observations today.

I was really blown away. I love living in Lancaster. I love the city. And after four years of being here I’m embarrassed to admit, I had no idea what kind of art scene there was here. I expected a lot of duck and barn artists* and a sprinkling of “real” stuff. I was very, very wrong. There is obviously a vibrant and creative community of artists here in Lancaster if ArtWalk is any way to even glimpse it. I was impressed by the range and talent exhibited and it matches up with any artistic event I’ve been to.

So, in adding the link to the Flickr Gallery of ArtWalk images, I want to say I was stupid, ArtWalk was amazing and should be a “must attend” on everyone’s list of things you want to do.

If you enjoy the images half as much as I enjoyed shooting them today, you’re going to have a great time.

Thanks for stopping by.

*duck and barn artists tend to gather together at “art shows” and “craft fairs”. Most do these shows professionally. Most of these artists are retired from other careers and came to art late in life. They tend to be realists with little training and they subjects tend to be the most pedestrian possible.

Now, with all that said, there is nothing wrong with duck and barn painters/artists. Nothing at all. It’s not my cup of tea. But again, there is obviously a market for this stuff and why not, I suppose. The reason I mention this as I do is that I think the shows or events where the majority of the work is this type tend to be, well, boring. That’s just my opinion.
